A MILLION DREAMS

“A person is the product of their dreams.

...Dream great dreams. And then try to live your dream.”

—Maya Angelou

Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now

At a time when many institutions of higher

education and their faculty and staff are

beset by inflation, enrollment pressures,

and constraints on their autonomy, it may be

hard to find joy or motivation to tackle the

many challenges of an ever-changing higher

education landscape. As I have faced these

challenges, I have had the good fortune

of sitting at a privileged vantage point in

higher education.

In visiting students in their first-year seminar

classes, I find myself caught up in their

enthusiasm for the future. While shaking

the hands of thousands as they cross the

commencement stage, I feel the joy of their

effusive energy, having just accomplished

something years in the making they

rightfully believe will change their life.

In luncheon conversations with alumni at

various stages in their career, I see the

positive, tangible effects of higher

education rippling through the lives of

those who surround them.

I also spend many hours talking to faculty

members about their scholarship, creative

pursuits, teaching innovations, and passionate

drive to serve their professions, communities,

and the institution. Similarly, I hear staff share

their enthusiasm for leading projects that

advance the institution’s mission.

All these touchpoints of positivity draw me to

a renewed focus on our purpose, tuning out

the noise and negativity. When I dwell on the

millions of dreams from faculty and staff to

students and alums and the impacts on

our communities, I see firsthand the

value Texas Woman’s adds to the state.

I hope this report ignites your passion

for engaging with Texas Woman’s, to be

a part of these dreamers, big and small,

and “the world we’re gonna make.”

...for the World We’re

Gonna Make

Pioneers, from inventors to entrepreneurs, share one thing in common —big dreams. At Texas

Woman’s, we cultivate and nurture the determination and courage or, as we say in Texas, true grit,

that’s needed to make dreams happen. We open the doors of opportunity, empowering all students

to pursue their dreams. And, finally, we choose to dream big, to innovate and transform, as we

trailblaze a new future.

Research Close to the Heart

Not only did Tracy Tyner know her research

topic before even enrolling at Texas Woman’s—

she lived it. In late 2017, she received a breast

cancer diagnosis. By early 2018, Tyner

underwent a double mastectomy with flat

closure, addressing the cancer but removing

the option of breast reconstruction. While

Tyner’s procedure went well and she is now

cancer free, she found an online community of

women who experienced the same ordeal but

with negative outcomes. In 2019, she enrolled

in the PhD in Nursing Science program inspired

to help these women and advocate for

breast cancer awareness.

Advocate for Diversity

As a proud Vietnamese-American, diversity

and inclusion is a top priority for fashion

merchandising alum Tiana James. When

the global brand Victoria’s Secret needed

to redefine its PINK apparel line, giving it

greater appeal to people of color, the

company tapped James to manage public

relations and partnerships. Her role in

PINK’s authentic and diverse rebrand

earned James a spot in the

Ad Age 40 under 40 list.

Dancing through Barriers

Even at a university that prides itself on

diversity and inclusion, there remain barriers

to break. Iquail Shaheed shattered one of

them when he became the first Black male

to earn a PhD in dance at TWU. Shaheed’s

path to a PhD was made possible by TWU’s

low-residency program, which allows students

already deeply involved in their careers to

pursue a PhD without taking time off from

work. Shaheed’s schedule included traveling,

touring and performing, as well as teaching

in New York City and at Goucher College in

Baltimore, Maryland.

A Family Affair

More than 1 in 5 college students are raising children while attending schools,

with 53% raising a child under the age of 6. Balancing parenthood, a job and the

challenges of pursuing a degree can pose significant barriers to college completion.

Because of Texas Woman’s focus on opportunity and excellence, we continue to

develop targeted programs—a whole family approach—to meet the needs of our

student-parent community.

Bezos Academy

Texas Woman’s is partnering with the Bezos Academy to offer

student-parents free child care for 3- to 5-year olds. While the

partnership has not been finalized, TWU has already received

board of regents approval to build a child-care facility on existing

university land.

The Bezos Academy is a Montessori-inspired, full-day preschool

available to families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty

limit, or $111,000 for a family of four.

SUCCESS Child Care Voucher Program

This programs helps ease the child-care burden through funding of a

sliding scale voucher system and other support for qualified TWU students.

The TWU Holiday Gift Program

The holiday gift program has helped student-parents provide gifts for their

children for more than 30 years. Since tracking began in 2015, the program

has served 2,463 student-parents and 5,054 of their children.

Opening Doors

to Opportunity

A number of successful, female thought leaders recognize that “something

special” happens at women’s colleges. Maybe that is why Carrie Kerpen

published an article in Forbes, “Want Your Daughter to Go to the C-Suite?

Send her to a Woman’s College.” A Women’s College Coalition study found

students who attended women’s colleges are more likely to major in nontraditional

fields, graduate, have high expectations of themselves, attend graduate school, and

be successful in their adult lives.

Alumni of women’s colleges comprise more than 20% of women in U.S. Congress,

and represent 30% of a Businessweek list of rising women in corporate America.

This is significant given that women’s college graduates make up only 2% of the

total female college graduate population.

Supportive environments that meet the needs of a diverse student

population are a big part of that “something special” found at Texas

Woman’s. Data shows comprehensive support systems go a long

way in keeping more students in college. It is something we do well at

TWU and it shows. Prior to the pandemic, TWU not only bucked the

state and national trends for persistence, we did it in a big way—closing

the retention gap between White, Hispanic and Black students.

Texas Woman’s University is making dreams

$125 Million Campaign

CELEBRATING

YEARS

More than 100 years ago, the Girls Industrial College of Texas,

which would become Texas Woman’s University, was established as a bold,

new experiment of educating young women well beyond traditional finishing

school boundaries. The idea was to “fully prepare girls for the practical

industries of the age,” according to the school’s first catalogue.

From the beginning, Texas Woman’s blazed its own trail. The original board

of regents included three women, marking the first time women were

appointed to leadership positions on a Texas university governing board.

Today, advancing women’s leadership is hard-wired in everything we do.

OPEN DOORS

During the century, TWU has achieved thousands of “firsts” for the women

of Texas and beyond, including the establishment of the nation’s only

woman-focused university system.

FUEL INNOVATION

Living the dream. Our passionate dreamers are also doers—a

community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners who have

helped shape the legacy of Texas Woman’s University.

Their stories and commitment provide the “why” for another historic first—

the launch of an inaugural comprehensive campaign where the past and

future converge. This opportunity is too big to dream small.

We are celebrating the university’s 125-year anniversary by raising

$125 million by 2026 to support big dreams and even bigger impacts.

What Dreams

are Made of

Academic Excellence

There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.

Since our inception, the university motto “We learn by doing” has permeated Texas Woman’s

academic environment from teaching to research. Interdisciplinary and inter-professional

collaborations between our five colleges brings new perspectives and ideas to the teaching

and learning process, enhancing the experience and, more importantly, student outcomes.

At Texas Woman’s, we continually seek to lift ourselves high enough to see beyond the horizon.

2023

10-year Institutional Reaffirmation of Accreditation

The entire university community contributed to making the reaffirmation visit by

the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the body for the accreditation of

degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states, so meaningful.

Site visit committee members positively gushed about the warmth and collegiality

found on campus. Over and over, the committee commented on how everyone’s

commitment to the mission was palpable—one member thanked a grounds crew

employee for how nice the campus looked. The crew member shared how vital the

grounds are for student success. Hearing that story is a dream come true—when

everyone at the university can articulate how they play an essential part in making

the big picture. Concerning the quality enhancement plan—Amplify Your Impact—

the committee chair said, “[It’s] the best QEP I’ve ever seen.”

College of Business Accreditation

The College of Business earned accreditation from the Association to Advance

Collegiate Schools of Business, which is widely considered to be the gold standard

for accreditation. Less than 6% of business schools worldwide have achieved the

level of excellence in teaching, research, curriculum development, and student

learning needed to earn AACSB accreditation. Texas Woman’s College of Business

is the only one in the state with AACSB accreditation that offers an MBA with an

emphasis in Women in Leadership.

Stroke Center – Dallas

The Stroke Center – Dallas celebrated its 30th anniversary,

marking a milestone in the center’s contributions to research

and rehabilitation for stroke and traumatic brain injury. Over

the years, thousands of hours of transformational treatment

have been provided to stroke patients, helping them overcome

challenges and increasing their quality of life—at no cost. At the

same time, the center provides exceptional hands-on training

for TWU graduate students who are pursuing careers in

communication disorders and other disciplines.

Dental Hygiene Clinic

Texas is among states with the greatest

dental health needs and has one of the

lowest number of dental visits per capita.

The Dental Hygiene Clinic has offered

low-cost dental services to the community

for 50 years. Under the supervision of

licensed dental hygienists and dentists,

students provide services such as teeth

cleanings, X-rays, oral cancer screenings, and

whitening procedures. TWU was ranked #5

in the 2023’s List of 15 Best Dental Hygiene

Programs in Texas by NursingProcess.org.

New Horizons

2023 Transformation Award

The American Council on Education presented the 2023 ACE/Fidelity Investments

Award for Institutional Transformation to Texas Woman’s University for the development

and implementation of an ambitious strategic plan.

Texas Woman’s University became the first four-year institution in the state to receive

the honor putting TWU in the company of other institutions who have received the

award, including University of California–San Diego, Arizona State University, and Georgia

State University.

In her acceptance speech, Chancellor Carine M. Feyten credited the Texas Woman’s

community and the months spent collaboratively honing an identity and aligning

strategic initiatives with the university mission.

“Today, we no longer hide behind the ambiguity of the moniker TWU. Instead, we

proudly call ourselves Texas Woman’s and claim our identity as the nation’s first

woman-focused university system,” Feyten stated. “We believe that when you educate

a woman, you empower the world. It is the faculty and staff’s collective believing in

something that has truly made all the difference.”

“When I look back and connect

the dots, I would say our

transformation spun out of a

singular focus on our mission.

I have had the pleasure to witness

incredible tangible and intangible

growth, but most compellingly,

I hear from our students, more

than half first-gen, about how

their Texas Woman’s experience

is giving them the confidence

and tools to leverage their

lived experiences and natural

intelligence in ways that will

positively impact the world.
